Turtles   ( Kindergarten-1st Grade)

SDCC provides a safe and relaxed environment for children entering kindergarten and first grade. The Turtles class accommodates before and after school care for 30 children. Calvert County Public Schools provide bus service to Dowell and Patuxent Elementary Schools from our location.

Mornings will find children painting, playing board games, singing and dancing, and having a morning snack. Teachers monitor all the activities and make certain each child has their backpack, lunch box, and jacket as they form a line to board the school bus.

Upon returning to SDCC at the end of a school day we offer the opportunity to laugh, eat, and play. Some children enthusiastically share highlights from their day while enjoying a healthy snack. Other children eager to release some energy move quickly to the playground where they can run, climb the jungle gym, swing, or build castles in the sand.

School holidays and closings allow Turtles to enjoy a full day of games, art and crafts and hanging out with friends.

Summer

By the end of a school year children are ready for some summer fun and SDCC delivers. Our turtles enjoy field trips, examples include pirate ships, climbing walls, amusement arcades, movie theatres, and scavenger hunts. And on-site activities can be just as exciting.

We have brought special guests to visit, such as magicians, reptile experts, storytellers, and puppet shows. We also create our own fun by including sprinkler play, obstacle courses, team challenges, and color wars (a powdered paint extravaganza). Everything is not run, jump, roll, and being covered in paint. Everyday contains a quiet time for social conversation, recovery, reflection, reading and relaxing, and possibly a short nap.

Children are encouraged to make choices, pursue interests, and demonstrate responsibility while having fun with their peers.
